Bhagavad Gita Chanting Competition 2024

  • Date: April 20, 2024 (Saturday), 1 pm - 5 pm
  • Location: Chinmaya Sundaram
  • Chapter: Jñāna Karma Sannyāsa Yoga (Chapter 4 - The Yoga of Renunciation of Action in Knowledge)
  • All CMA member families (children and adults) are invited to offer their wholehearted and enthusiastic participation in this 2024 chanting yagna at the Lotus Feet of our beloved Pujya Gurudev on the auspicious occasion of His 108th Jayanti.

Competition Categories & Verse Assignments

Memory (Full)
- Open to Bala Vihar children in Grades 1-12 & Adults
- Children must be registered in Bala Vihar to participate in this category
- Participants will chant from memory
- Rounds per participant: 5
- All participarnts will start by chanting the chapter opening
- All participants will then chant the first shloka (verse 4.1). After that, they will wait for the prompt for the first round.
- In each of the 5 rounds, the first two words of the first quarter (or pādaḥ) of a verse will be read out as a prompt to the participant. The participant then has to recall and chant the 3 verses starting with the prompted quarter. After chanting the 3 verses, the participant stops and waits for the prompt for the next round.
- After all 5 rounds are completed in this manner, all participants should chant the chapter closing.
Memory & Comprehension (Partial)
- Open to Grades 1-12 & Adults
- Participants will chant all assigned verses, chapter opening and closing from memory
- The judges will then read the English meaning of a random verse, and the participant will need to identify the relevant verse. This will be repeated for a total of 4 verses.
Memory(Partial)
- Open to Grades PK-12 & Adults
- Participants will chant all assigned verses, chapter opening and closing from memory
Reading(Partial)
- Open to Grades 1-12 & Adults
- Participants will chant all assigned verses, chapter opening and closing by reading
Reflective Writing
- Open to Grades 10-12 & Adults
- This category can be selected by itself or in addition to any of the chanting categories.
- Reflect on one or more of Chapter 4 verses 1-42 by studying the word meaning, verse meaning and the associated commentary. Then write a short passage in your own words explaining why you selected the specific verse(s) and your key takeaways.
- Passage should not exceed 500 words
- Submit your passage as an attachment via email to gita.chant@chinmayaaustin.org by April 13, 2024 .

Children are encouraged to participate in the memory categories. High-schoolers and adults are encouraged to participate in the comprehension and reflection categories. By participating in chanting, comprehension and reflection, we will be more and more conscious of the knowledge of the Self.
